3 Important Things To Know When Hiring A Bail Bondsman To Bail A Loved One From Jail

April George

For many people, calling a bail bondsman is their first move after realizing that a loved one is in jail. If you're in this situation, this could be what you are planning on doing. This is often the best course of action when you want to get a family member or close friend out of jail, but you should be well informed throughout the process. These are some of the main things that you will probably want to know.

1. The Bondsman's Fee Is Nonrefundable

As you may already know, cash bail is typically refundable as long as the person who you bail out of jail goes to all of their court dates. However, this is only the case if you pay for a person's entire bail in cash. This is done at the courthouse or magistrate's office without the help of a bail bondsman.

Hiring a bail bondsman can be a good idea, since this makes getting someone out of jail a lot easier and more affordable. However, the fee that you pay to a bail bondsman is the bondsman's fee for offering the service. This means that this money is nonrefundable. Make sure that you are financially prepared for this before you pay the fee to get someone out of jail.

2. You May Not Have to Pay in Cash

If you assume that you will only be able to pay in cash when working with a bail bondsman, you will probably be happy to know that this does not always have to be the case. Although some bail bondsmen will only accept cash payments, many accept debit or credit cards for their customers' convenience. In some cases, you may even be able to trade in jewelry or other valuables, depending on what the bail bondsman will allow. Call ahead if you aren't sure of what your options are for paying your loved one's bond.

3. You May Be Responsible If Your Loved One Doesn't Go to Court

If you are the person who hires the bail bondsman and gets your loved one out of jail, then you may be considered partly responsible for the bond that the bail bondsman puts up. This means that if your loved one does not show up for all of their court dates, the bail bondsman might come to you for part or all of the bond that was lost because of it. The bail bondsman might also ask you about your loved one's whereabouts. Read the fine print and ask questions so that you will know what you are and are not responsible for, and make sure that you only bail a person out of jail if you trust them to show up for court as they are supposed to.
